Manga Monday: Animerica Extra

Though Viz Media was already publishing Animerica, they decided to release a monthly manga anthology magazine titled Animerica Extra.

Launching in 1998, the publication would go on to include X/1999, Steam Detectives, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Video Girl AI, Chicago, Banana Fish, Fushigi Yugi, Marionette Generation, Short Program, and Maison Ikkoku. In the magazine's later years it tried to appeal more to the shojo (teenage female) crowd. Animerica Extra ceased publication in 2004, though Viz tried their hand at a similarly themed and formatted magazine, called Shojo Beat, in 2005. Shojo Beat lasted until 2009 and all outstanding subscriptions were transferred to Viz's Shonen Jump, where girls who had once been mesmerized by the romantic tribulations of Nana could now follow the zany ninja exploits of Naruto and Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo.
